Occupant protection systems are used to keep the driver and all occupants on their seats, protect them against injuries and increase the survival chances for serious accidents. Seat belts, belt tensioners and airbags are the central restraining systems to mitigate accident sequences. Important components of airbag systems are pyrotechnic components such as igniters and gas generators. Depending on the model, front and side airbags, head and thorax airbags, knee and foot airbags as well as headrest airbags are supplied, triggered via multi-dimensional acceleration sensors. The trigger systems for the roll-over protection of convertible cars also belong to the occupant protection systems. Restraint systems are integrated into passenger and commercial vehicles by OEMs and must comply with the general requirements for occupant protection in Germany, which are described in the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations.
